Governor Joe Manchin III names April 17 West Virginia GEAR UP Day
Governor Joe Manchin III proclaimed Saturday, April 17 as West Virginia GEAR UP Day in conjunction with the second annual West Virginia GEAR UP Governor’s Honors Symposium.
First Lady Gayle Manchin presented the proclamation to Dr. Adam Green, Director of the Division of Student Success and P-20 Initiatives during the afternoon ceremony.
The Symposium was held Saturday at the Charleston Civic Center to honor graduating seniors from 16 schools from the ten WV GEAR UP counties. First Lady Gayle Manchin and Higher Education Policy Commission Chancellor Brian Noland commended the students completing high school and urged them to pursue education and training after high school.
During the event, nearly 200 students were recognized and presented with medallions. Before and after the ceremony, students and their family members had the opportunity to tour a college fair and speak with representatives from colleges and universities from both in-state and out-of-state institutions.
Students also participated in a mobile lab where they could apply for the 2010 West Virginia GEAR UP Incentive Award, which provides eligible seniors with a financial aid award to attend any West Virginia Higher Education grant-eligible institutions in the state, including public and private two-and four-year institutions.
