K-12 and Higher Education Experts from Throughout the State Join Forces to Tackle College Access Issues
More than 200 teachers, counselors, professors, and administrators from the West Virginia’s K-12 and higher education systems gathered in April during West Virginia’s first College Access and Student Success Summit. The one-day event was designed to address the need to increase the college attainment rate in the state. West Virginia currently trails the nation in terms of college graduates as only 17 percent of the state’s residents have completed a bachelor’s degree.
The Summit featured sessions regarding student retention; parent involvement; best practices in college access; the work of student support and college access programs like Upward Bound, TRiO, College Summit, and GEAR UP; and strategies for better aligning elementary, secondary and postsecondary curriculum. An afternoon round table discussion focused on developing strategies to build a more cohesive, life-long learning system.
The free event was sponsored by West Virginia GEAR UP, Fairmont State GEAR UP, and the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission’s P-20 Collaborative Task Force.
